Silver Jewelry Cleaning Tips

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

There are two ways to easily remove the buildup of tarnish from your silver jewelry. If you live in a humid climate your sterling silver jewelry will tarnish quickly and you’ll need to clean it quite regularly.

We are going to create an inexpensive silver dip solution. The silver dip works by creating a chemical reaction which removes tarnish. It is a great technique for cleaning silver chains or sterling silver pearl earrings which are difficult to clean by hand. You must not under any circumstances place any type of gemstones in the solution, it may permanently damage the stone.

Firstly find a bowl or large cup and line the sides with aluminum foil. Next place your jewelry inside the lined cup or bowl. Cover the jewelry with a small amount of baking soda, just enough so you can barely see the jewelry. Next pour hot water over the jewelry and wait for the bubbling to stop.

After the solution has stopped bubbling rinse and buff the silver jewelry such as silver pearl pendant, pearl necklace or silver pearl bracelet dry with your cloth. You may need to repeat the process up to 5-6 times for badly tarnished pieces. Please also be careful to keep yourself away from any fumes and ensure the room is well ventilated before starting.

To clean silver jewelry which contains gemstones create a solution of mild detergent and warm water. Now gently buff small sections of the jewelry taking care not to touch the gemstone. Rinse and dry to complete the process. If the jewelry is heavily tarnished or still requires cleaning you may require a specialized silver cleaning paste or professional cleaning. Keep in mind that the harsher the cleaner the more likely your jewelry will be damaged.

Akoya Pearls Introduction

The Development of Akoya Pearls

A beaded cultured pearl produced in Pinctada fucata, the Akoya pearl oyster. Pinctada fucata is used extensively for pearl culture in Japan, China and other areas. Akoya pearl is the Japanese name for this pearl oyster.

Today’s centre of pearl culture in Japan is Kashikojima, from where one can look over the countless small bays with their bamboo rafts on clear days. Until 1938, nearly all cultured pearls came from the Ago Bay or neighboring areas in Mie Prefecture. The prefecture is still the second most important area, and around one third of all pearls come from there. Later in 20 century, Ehime Prefecture was the most important pearl culture area and achieved a slightly higher production than Mie and Kyushu.

Guangxi and Guangdong Province are the main Akoya cultured pearl areas in China. Actually Zhanjiang is one of China’s most important pearl production centers in Guangdong Province. Its output of Akoya cultured pearls makes up two thirds of the country’s total saltwater production. So we set out on a trip to one their farms.  Being surrounded by sea on three sides, Zhanjiang is blessed with rich marine resources. It has more than 30 island; the total length of coastline is some 1,500 kilometers. Zhanjiang is situated to the south of the Tropic of Cancer and is typical of a tropical climate. Now there are probably about 2,000 to 4,000 farms in China today. About 60% of the local people along the coasts of Guangxi and Guangdong probably work in the cultured pearl jewelry industry today.

The Formation of Akoya Cultured Pearl

The formation of the actual pearl sack takes about two weeks at a water temperature of 16degree. The pearl sack grows continuously larger by cell division and surrounds the flowing pearl. The slimy type of skin that is seen when the pearl are harvested is nothing other than the pearl sack. During the grafting process, a nucleus made of mother-of-pearl and a tiny piece of mantle tissue from a donor mollusk are inserted together in such a way that the outer epithelium cells touch the nucleus. The outer epithelium cells of the square of mantle tissue are temporarily replaced with longish, elastic cells, which surround the nucleus, while the endoderm and the connective tissue are dissolved. The rounded epithelium cells appear again and grow into the actual pearl sack. At the same time, they start to secrete pearly substance. After the nucleus insertion process, the mollusk need up to six weeks in an intensive care station in order to recover. The actual growth time begins after the intensive care period, when the operated mollusks are taken to their allocated destination.

The ways to maintain pearl jewelry

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Once you have already got a pearl jewelry, you may want to know how to maintain your pearl jewelry. Actually, different from other gemstones, pearls need more care, they are not as hard as diamond, and they are produced from the living beings, so people should pay more attention to its maintenance. The following is the ways to maintain pearl jewelry.

The first should be attention is to distinguish your pearls from any acid, harsh objects, and heat. It consists of cleaners, talcum powers as well as acids such as makeup, perfume. Make sure that your pearl jewelry is put on last, and take down first. All is all; remember the rule of last on, first off. You should also keep them away from heat and direct sunlight to avoid damage.

As far as the way of storage, because pearls are relatively easy to be scratched, so it is important to keep them away from other jewelries. You can choose to put it in a soft pouch or just let it be in its original box or container. Make sure that the storing place should be cool and ventilated. Also, keep in mind that pearl necklaces are typically strung with silk, so to avoid stressing the delicate thread I would recommend against hanging your necklace up. You can still do it, but keep in mind that you will need to restring your pearls more often.

Considering about the damage of pearls, you should check your pearl jewelry time by time. And the same as other jewelries, pearl jewelry will get dirty over time. You could clean them personally with slightly damp, soft and clean cloth. Do not use any scrubbing device such as a toothbrush or a sponge, as well as any soap or detergent. By this way will help prevent contacting with body oil and other substances to maintain its luster and beauty. In addition, remember that you should not wear your pearl jewelry everywhere you go in everything that you do, particularly when you are engaging in physical activity like working out in the gym or planting in the yard. This is because your perspiration and dirt would damage the luster of pearl jewelry. So, although pearls are generally made in the ocean, it does not follow that it would be fine to wear them as you go scuba diving, swimming or surfing. You should know that pearls are sensitive to elements so you must not show them off all the time.
